Man docked for raping pregnant woman

A 25- year-old welder, Monday Maule, has been arraigned before a Lagos State Magistrate Court sitting in Tinubu for allegedly raping eight months pregnant woman, Chinyere Samuel Maule who resides at Friends Colony, Agungi in Lekki is a neighbour to Chinere. He was docked before Magistrate Olaitan Ajayi on one count charge of rape.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty. The prosecutor, Sergeant Daniel Ighodalo, told the court that Maule unlawfully and forcefully had sex with Chinyere, aged 23, who was eight months pregnant. He explained that the victim’s husband was not in the house when the incident happened.
He said the incident took place on February 23, 2015 between 4:30am and 5am, while the victim was asleep, adding that Maule committed the offence while the victim, who is already a mother of four while sleeping.
                The prosecutor told the court  that the victim was deeply asleep and did not lock her door, woke up with pains in her private part and her face. She felt dizzy, and raised the alarm, Chinyere said, she was unable to fight the defendant because of her condition.
According to the prosecutor, the offence is punishable under Section 259 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011 which prescribes life imprisonment for rapists.
Magistrate Ajayi granted the defendant bail for N250,000, with two responsible sureties in like sum. She adjourned the matter till March 23 for the legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
